During the fall garlic planting at ECO Farm, I helped peel cloves, plant them in the soil, and cover them with hay to protect them through the winter. Through our efforts, we were able to plant around 6,000 garlic cloves that will be harvested next semester. While working, I learned how each step supports the farm's sustainable growing methods. The tour of the farm showed me how they reduce waste and use materials to grow their crops. This experience allowed me to appreciate agriculture and become more in tune with the environment.

At the Fall Garlic planting event I was able to do hands on learning and planting of garlic cloves with other Howard University student volunteers. I learned how to separate the cloves by hand and how deep to plant them one by one. This event also helped contribute to my teamwork skills allowing to have to meet others and work with them in order to get the process done. Lastly, this event helped further my knowledge on sustainable gardening projects and and how they play a big part in community.

While volunteering to plant garlic, I helped prepare soil, separate cloves, and plant them for the next growing season. This experience connects to biology through the study of plant reproduction and growth. Each garlic clove acts as a vegetative propagule, capable of developing into a genetically identical plant through asexual reproduction. It also highlights ecological principles like nutrient cycling and the importance of soil health in supporting plant life.
