What is a better way to spend your evening than with a friend or stranger and turning off all the lights in a huge campus building? This service falls within Environmentalism and Sustainability. During this experience, I spent 45 minutes walking through an assigned building to turn off all the lights that had been left on after class times ended. The issue we are addressing here is unnecessary energy consumption, which matters majorly as wasted electricity increases costs and induces additional strain on environmental resources. Although turning off lights may seem like a small action, these efforts add up over time and make a meaningful differences across our campus. This experience is the kind of impact I want to have as a Thompson Scholar, as it shows how simple acts of service create positive changes for the community and enviornment. Even though it is only 45 minutes, the time and effort you put into it truly adds up, and I love hearing the statistics every now and then! Makes you feel really good about yourself and your community. I plan to participate in more sustainability-focused services like this one and become even more mindful of my own energy consumption. I rate this service a 5/5; the work we put in directly helps reduce energy usage and supports the wonderful BGSU sustainability community and their efforts. Highly encourage you to spend a Friday night attending FNL:).
What is a better way to spend your evening than with a friend and turning off all the lights in a huge campus building? Us two alone spent an hour roaming around McLeod Hall making sure all the lights were off-- yes, even the sneaky corner ones! Not only was this overall just a fun experience, but it feels amazing to have been able to contribute to a healthier environment. Just by us turning off the lights, we have continued to reduce unnecessary electrical usage by a decent amount! It may seem like a small deed, but do not be fooled-- it adds up with time. Energy usage is a major issue, especially on college campus' like ours. Every act counts, even the small ones. Just by flipping off a switch, you can change the route of our future for the better. I will definitely be attending these more often next semester:). Highly recommend!
