During my service I helped first separate the garlic into individual pieces. Then helped plant them into our soil. Then had to cover our plantings with straw to help preserve them for winter. I observed firsthand how garlic hates competition. If planted too closely, the massive root systems become tangled and stunt each other’s growth. Planting them 4 to 6 inches apart gives each one enough room to grow into a full head.

During my service I helped lay out straw, watered plants, and removed dead plants to help grow new ones. I learned new techniques to keep plants alive and prevent soil from hardening during the winter.

I helped guide new voters on how to register and answered any questions they may have had about voting. I realized how confusing voting laws, deadlines, and registration requirements can be for first-time voters. I learned how to make complex instructions more easier for others to understand.
