    Amanda @ The Clothes Closet

This is a clothing donation center that serves a wide range of people in rural NE Texas, located in Roxton, Texas. People from surrounding counties come to get clothing, shoes, and other necessities absolutely free. Before or after browsing the clothes closet, most visitors also visit the food pantry located in the church next door. Mrs. Charlotte is a saint for all that she does through this organization. Today I helped bring out the women's summer clothing from storage and sort through it to make sure it was decent and could be put out for people to take (We check for stains, tears/holes, wear, etc.).

Today I continued my work from Tuesday, which included pulling out summer clothes for kids from storage and organizing them in the children’s clothing room. I also continued to help clean up the back storage room.

I helped some people shop through all that the Clothes Closet has to offer, and I cleaned up the back storage room.

Farm to Table Cooking Class: Cooking with Kids in the Garden

We helped 13 K-2nd graders from Washington Elementary's garden club create two new foods using recipes that used veggies straight out of the AppleSeeds Garden (grown and picked by the garden club's 3-4th graders)! We made veggie kabobs and sweet potato pizza bites. (Also, helped set up and clean up.)

    Amanda @ March for Babies

This was the March of Dimes - March for Babies event. I arrived and helped set up my area (The Fun Zone). When the event started, I worked the Home Depot Workshop table, where kids got to come build small little crafts with me - or take them home to build if they chose. Each kid got a certificate from Home Depot, too! During the event, there was a walk/run to honor the babies that have been lost and to celebrate the babies who graduated from the NICU, a superhero sprint for the little ones, an Easter egg hunt, and tons of other fun little stations around the Arvest Ballpark for families to enjoy. So fun, so heartwarming!

    Partner

We spent the morning and early part of the afternoon working with people with special needs from all over NWA for the Special Olympics. We were assigned a team and a partner, and got the opportunity to help both the team and our partners participate in volleyball and basketball games (we had to play indoor games due to the threat of rain hindering our ability to play flag football and kickball outside). It was a day full of so, so many smiles & so much happiness, and I am forever grateful that I got to be a part of something so wonderful. Our team members were a little shy at first, but once they got onto the volleyball court (our first game), they opened up and proved to be athletic rockstars. We won our volleyball match, then moved onto basketball. Different members of our team shined bright in basketball, and we were able to pull out another victory. I don't think I've ever been so proud of anyone as I was watching these athletes. It helped that we had such awesome fans that volunteered and made the atmosphere in the HPER gym explosive and so positive. The sportsmanship that everyone showed is really something to reflect on, because the whole group of athletes was so supportive of each other in victory and congratulatory in loss - something not a lot of people can do with such grace or dignity, in my opinion. To split up our day, we had pizza for lunch and a dance party in the gym - SO fun! After this break, the athletes were tiring quickly, so we ended the afternoon about 30 minutes early. We had a ceremony where every athlete was given a medal by us as their partners; it was really special. Really, it was such an awesome, wonderful day, and I hope to be able to do it again next year! The VAC and the Special Olympics NWA, as well as other partners and sponsors, did a great job putting on such a special event!
