About
Looking to meet others, get outside, and make a difference on campus and in the greater community through volunteering? Enjoy pancakes (or other breakfast foods) and want to meet President Cudd, our new university president?
Join PSU’s Student Community Engagement Center, the Student Sustainability Center, and Student Activities & Leadership Programs for Viking Day of Service and Pancakes with the President on Saturday, September 30th!
We will come together for a half day of breakfast, connection, and community engagement, as we spread out to support a few different service projects while getting to know one another!
- Project 1: Downtown Litter Clean-Up with SOLVE. Don a reflective vest, grab a trash bag and trash picker, and get ready to help clean-up the downtown areas neighboring our campus! Help keep our public spaces clean, enjoy some time outside, get to know downtown, and do something to support the city that PSU calls home. Many hands make light work! Volunteers will check-in, get oriented in small teams, grab gear, and then spread out in small pods into the nearby streets. After picking up litter in our designated areas while connecting to downtown’s many offerings, we will reconvene on campus for a post-project wrap-up. (40 slots; outdoor, active project; wheelchair accessible options for clean-up route)
- (CURRENTLY FULL!) Project 2: Help Activate PSU's Newest Greenspace! Next to the established PSU Orchard (near Parking Structure One and Epler), this event will introduce the new PSU Community Greenspace 'The Green' to the campus community. This event will be one of the first in the space "breaking ground" on a multiyear student vision of creating a new campus greenspace. Help establish and beautify the space by adding some plants and creating the basis for a future garden and outdoor classroom! Activities may include shoveling, moving soil and garden beds, weeding, and other hands-on physical activities rain or shine. (20 slots; outdoor, active project on uneven surfaces)
- (CURRENTLY FULL!) Project 3: Show Our Homebound Elders Some Love: Craft Cards for Seniors Brighten a senior's day by bringing your creativity to craft, decorate, and/or write homemade cards to be distributed with Meals on Wheels meals or grocery delivery to older adults who cannot easily get out of the house anymore. We will take a little bit of time to learn about Meals on Wheels and Store to Door, our two partner organizations, and the impact they make to address senior hunger and social isolation. Then we'll settle in with colorful paper, markers, glue sticks, and stickers to craft all sorts of cards -- from birthday greetings to "enjoy your meal" to a simple "hello" -- for our community partners to distribute to our elderly neighbors. (20 slots; indoor, seated project; wheelchair accessible and open to students with children who want to join)
You will be able to indicate your preference of project at registration and will be confirmed based on space availability.
All volunteers will meet centrally at Parkway North (in Smith Memorial Student Union, SMSU 101) to check in, enjoy a tasty breakfast, say hello to President Cudd, and meet their project groups. After some food and a brief welcome and orientation, each project group will set off on their respective service projects!
Projects will wrap up around 1pm after a post-project debrief and thank you. We encourage you to take advantage of the PSU Farmer's Market in the Park Blocks (open till 2pm) if you're looking for a great place to grab lunch after your service!
