The nonprofit Undue Medical Debt buys medical debt as a normal debt collector would from hospitals and medical groups, but then they completely abolish every person’s debt. They’ve abolished over $50 billion to date!
And 1,000 churches have helped them abolish $10 billion.
What’s fascinating is that you can purchase $1 of medical debt for only 1 penny on average, so this model has extraordinary leverage. For Lafayette/Marshall/Panola/Yalobusha counties, we can abolish $1.8 million of medical debt for $14,000 and our service club ANF Oxford is launching a campaign to do this!
Our giving circle just voted to make a $3k gift to get the campaign going. We’re now seeking to recruit 1,000 other community members to donate $11 to the campaign and make it super grassroots effort!
It’s an awesome and relatively easy way for us to make an impact in the community, and hopefully inspires us do more good things like this together.
We’re in "the quiet phase” of this campaign where we’re still trying to figure out our plan of attack, but if you’d be open to becoming one of the $11 donors now it would be super helpful for generating momentum. Donate on this page.
One of the things we’re exploring is publicly announcing it on a Sunday, calling it “Debt Free Sunday”, a bunch of churches and other groups sharing it, and hopefully eliminate all of it that day.
If your church or group would be interested in exploring being a part of this, contact Alex Cortes (alex@normalfolks.org, 312-286-5883) and he’d love to connect.
If you’d be interested in having a club meeting where we can brainstorm about this campaign over beers (or coffee), contact Alex and we can see if there’s enough interest to do so :)
And if you’d be interested in joining the giving circle, where we pool our giving for fun campaigns like this and to support local nonprofits, you can join here. The minimum gift is $10/mo and the max is $25k/person.
